Stay in FLOW | Full Moon in Aries . Tending the Sacred Fire
Only a few days after the Equinox, the Full Moon rises in Aries, illuminating the opposite end of the Libra–Aries axis. We have just been contemplating Libra | relationship, reciprocity, balance, the art of meeting another without losing ourselves.
Now the light turns toward the other side of the scale. The I.
Aries brings us back to the primordial fire of selfhood, the instinct to exist, to act, to desire, to protect what is alive within us. And perhaps this is where the relationship between Venus and Mars becomes so interesting. Aphrodite and Ares.
Love and war. Beauty and courage. Attraction and assertion. The capacity to unite and the capacity to stand alone. In the ancient myth, Aphrodite and Ares are lovers. Their union gives birth, among others, to Harmonia, a beautiful embodiment of what can emerge when love and fire come into relationship.
But the story of Harmonia carries another image that has been calling my attention | the necklace she receives at her wedding. The necklace passes through generations, carried from one person to another, becoming part of the lineage and eventually carrying both beauty and disturbance with it.
I find something deeply symbolic in this. A necklace is made of many individual beads, each one distinct, yet held together by a single thread.
Aries is the bead. Libra is the thread. Harmonia is the relationship that allows the necklace to exist. Each of us is a singular expression of life, carrying our own particular fire. Yet none of us exists outside relationship. We inherit something from those who came before us, and what we do with that inheritance becomes part of what moves forward through us.
And what we inherit is never only wisdom. We receive patterns, loyalties, desires, fears, conflicts, gifts and unfinished stories. So perhaps preserving the lineage does not mean preserving everything exactly as it was. Sometimes, preserving the fire means knowing what must continue and what must be transformed so that life itself can continue.
This brings me back to Aries. I don't experience Aries simply as the warrior who fights.
The deeper warrior knows what is worth protecting. This Full Moon invites us to look carefully at our sacred fire.
What keeps the flame alive?
What have we been protecting because it is truly essential, and what have we been defending simply because the ego has become attached to being right?
Where have we abandoned something essential in ourselves in the name of keeping peace?
And where might we be creating conflict simply to prove that we exist?
Libra teaches us to tend the relationship.
Aries reminds us to tend the flame that makes relationship possible.
The wisdom may be in allowing both to exist | neither avoiding conflict to preserve harmony, nor creating conflict to prove the self, but learning to recognize which battles protect the sacred fire, and which simply consume it.
With Chiron retrograde at the very end of Aries, this Full Moon also brings a particularly intimate reflection around identity, selfhood and the places where our instinct to assert ourselves has become tender.
Take a moment to look at your natal chart and find the house where Aries lives.
This Full Moon illuminates that territory of your life, bringing the emotional intelligence of the Moon to whatever Aries represents there | your sense of self, your instinct to act, your desire, your courage, your independence, or your capacity to protect what is essential.
And perhaps this is also where we can contemplate the meeting of Aphrodite and Ares within ourselves. Not as opposites that need to be reconciled once and for all, but as two forces that need to remain in relationship.
Venus asks | How do I meet? Mars asks | How do I move?
Venus tends the bond. Mars tends the flame.
When they listen to one another, something beautiful becomes possible. Harmonia.
Not the absence of conflict, but the capacity to bring different forces into right relationship.
And perhaps the necklace gives us one final image to carry into this Full Moon |
The bead cannot become the necklace by itself.
The thread cannot become the necklace without the bead.
The lineage remains alive through the relationship between what we inherit and what we become.
To preserve the fire is not to keep the flame unchanged. It is to keep it alive.
Sharing a few botanical allies to meditate on our the sacred fire
Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata)
A meeting place of Venus and Mars | sensuality, softness, pleasure and the permission for fire to remain alive without becoming hard.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
A warm, rooted fire. A rhizome moving beneath the earth, carrying vitality, courage and the impulse to act from what is genuinely alive.
Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)
Sharp, directional and distinctly fiery. A symbolic companion when energy needs movement, clarity and the courage to take a stand.
Frankincense (Boswellia sacra)
A contemplative counterpart to the warrior. It invites the fire upward, transforming heat into presence, perspective and spaciousness.
Rose (Rosa damascena)
The heart within the fire. A reminder that tenderness does not diminish strength, and that what we protect becomes meaningful through love.
This Aries Full Moon reminds us that our sacred fire is not separate from relationship.
It is what we bring into relationship.
My Aries in my 7th house has taught me again and again... the deeper form of reciprocity begins here when we know what is ours, to honor what is another's, and to allow both to remain alive.
Like the beads of Harmonia's necklace, we are individual expressions of a much older thread.
We carry something forward.
And every generation is given the same quiet task |
to tend the thread,to tend the flame, and to know what must live through us. xx 💜
