The Fire We Nourish

An Ayurvedic journey through Cancer’s waters, Leo’s flame, and the cultivation of digestive vitality

As we move from the waters of Cancer into the fire of Leo, we enter a seasonal passage that mirrors the elemental nature of Pitta dosha, the union of fire and water.

Cancer teaches us how to nourish, soften, listen, and create the inner conditions in which we can feel held. Leo gathers those waters and warms them with vitality, courage, purpose, and the charisma to place our wellbeing at the centre of our lives.

In Ayurveda, summer is governed by Pitta, the intelligence of transformation. Its fire supports metabolism, digestion, discernment, vision, and focus, while its water allows that heat to circulate, penetrate, and sustain life. Together, these elements animate the processes through which we digest food, emotions, experiences, and the world around us.

During the warmer months, Pitta naturally intensifies. The same inner fire that gives us clarity and vitality can become excessive when we overwork, move too quickly, skip meals, consume overly stimulating foods, or ignore the body’s need for hydration, spaciousness, and rest. We may begin to experience acidity, inflammation, irritability, disrupted digestion, fatigue, or a heightened sensitivity to heat.

Ayurveda teaches that health begins with the cultivation of agni—our sacred digestive fire. When agni is steady, nourishment is transformed into energy, clarity, resilience, and ojas, the vital essence that supports immunity and deep wellbeing. Caring for this fire also means caring for the microbiome, the living inner ecosystem that influences digestion, nutrient assimilation, immunity, and mood.

Summer invites us to support this delicate balance through cooling and hydrating seasonal foods, regular meals, gentle movement, sufficient rest, and daily rhythms that allow the body to receive nourishment without becoming overwhelmed.

Leo then prepares the way for Virgo, the sign associated with digestion, discernment, purification, and the essence we are able to extract from what we consume. This passage offers a meaningful moment to observe our food habits, listen to how the body responds to heat, and choose forms of nourishment that sustain a diverse, resilient, and healthy microbiome.

Our Summer Ayurvedic Guidebook was created to accompany you through this season, offering practical rituals, nutritional guidance, and simple ways to regulate Pitta, care for your digestive fire, and remain deeply nourished throughout the summer.
