The Strings We Cannot See . A reflection on Emotional intelligence

There is something deeply moving about Pinocchio. A puppet brought to life.

At the beginning of his story, he is animated by strings. He moves because something else moves him. He is innocent, curious, open to the world, yet without the awareness to understand all the forces influencing his choices. And then life begins to happen. He encounters temptation, fear, belonging, rejection, desire, pleasure, disappointment. Every experience leaves an imprint. Every encounter begins to shape the way he perceives the world and, slowly, the way he understands himself.

Perhaps this is one of the great mysteries of being human. We are born with innocence, but we are not born formed. Consciousness is shaped through experience. We learn what is safe and what is dangerous. What brings belonging and what brings rejection. What we should express and what we should hide. We develop patterns of protection, ways of relating, ways of responding. And, often without realizing it, we begin to live according to strings we can no longer see.

Our biology has strings. Our memories have strings. Our relationships have strings. The seasons have strings. The cosmos has strings. We are constantly being moved by forces within and around us. The question is not whether we have strings. The question is whether we can become conscious of what is moving us. This, for me, is where emotional intelligence begins. Not in controlling emotion. Not in becoming unaffected. But in developing a relationship with the forces moving through us. I have come to understand these forces through the ancient language of the elements. Earth. Water. Fire. Air.

What is celestial and intangible becomes tangible through our biology. The great movements of nature become sensation, impulse, vitality, thought, emotion and behavior within the human experience. And the elemental traditions give these forces an imaginal language | the Gnomes of Earth, the Undines of Water, the Salamanders of Fire, and the Sylphs, fairies and elves of Air. Whether we encounter them as archetypes, symbolic intelligences or living presences within the natural world, they offer us a beautiful way of remembering that there are different kinds of intelligence moving through us.

Earth teaches us to stay. It gives us weight, structure, boundaries, principles and foundation. It reminds us that our time and energy are finite, and that what we choose to cultivate determines what can eventually take root. The Gnome within us knows how to tend, organize, refine, commit and build.

Water teaches us to feel and flow. It reminds us that emotion is not an obstacle to consciousness. Emotion is information in motion. Water teaches us to listen to our needs, to soften without collapsing, to adapt without losing ourselves, and to allow what needs to move to move. The Undine reminds us that flexibility is not weakness.

Fire teaches us to act. It is vitality, passion, courage, transformation and the force that turns intention into movement. The Salamander teaches us that fire is powerful precisely because it requires direction. Unconscious fire becomes reaction. Conscious fire becomes action. It can illuminate the path, clear what no longer serves, protect our vitality and give us the courage to follow what is alive within us.

Air teaches us to move and express. It is thought, language, perception and communication, the invisible bridge between our inner world and the world we create through our words. The Sylph reminds us to cultivate coherence between what we think, what we feel and what we communicate. Air gives us movement, perspective, dialogue and the ability to release what has become stagnant.

But none of these forces exists alone. We are not Earth or Water or Fire or Air. We are their permutation. We are an alchemical body through which these forces are continually moving, meeting, transforming one another. And perhaps this is where emotional intelligence becomes an art. To recognize the element beneath an experience. To feel where it lives in the body. To understand what it is asking for. To know when to ground, when to soften, when to act, when to speak, when to wait. Because the same emotional force can become medicine or poison depending on how consciously we relate to it.

Fire can become courage or anger. Water can become compassion or overwhelm. Air can become communication or anxiety. Earth can become stability or rigidity.

The work is not to suppress the force. It is to develop its intelligence. An emotion is energy in motion. When we do not know how to listen to it, we often move towards two extremes | repression or reaction. We hold it until it accumulates. Or we release it before consciousness has had the opportunity to participate. But there is another possibility. Relationship. To feel without being consumed. To express without discharging. To listen without immediately acting. To allow the sensation to complete its movement through us. To discover the right dosage, the right timing, the right form of expression. This is one of the reasons the Plant Kingdom has become such an important ally in my own understanding of emotional intelligence.

Plants speak through sensation. Through aroma. Through breath. Through the felt sense. Scent can reach places within us that language sometimes cannot. It can evoke memory, shift perception, create association and invite the body into a different relationship with an experience. I do not see aromatherapy as a way of overriding emotion. Rather, I see it as a sensory doorway, a way of creating a conscious relationship with the state we are inhabiting.

A reminder. An anchor. A ritual. A subtle invitation to the body | I am here. I am listening. I have a choice in how I meet this.

This understanding is what eventually inspired me to create Sacred Garden.

Because the seasons outside of us are also seasons within us. As the Sun moves through the zodiac, different elemental qualities become more pronounced, offering us an opportunity to consciously synchronize with the intelligence of the season.

As we enter Virgo, the Earth element comes forward. The Gnomes remind us of the intelligence of tending | returning to what is essential, creating order from what has become scattered, refining our methods, establishing rhythm, becoming intentional with our time, our energy and our attention.

Earth does not ask us to become rigid. It asks us to become rooted enough to choose. And perhaps this is what Pinocchio ultimately teaches us. The journey is not necessarily about cutting the strings. It is about becoming conscious of them. We will always be moved by something.

By our biology. By memory. By relationship. By the seasons. By the elements. By the invisible forces that animate life. But awareness changes our relationship with those forces.

We begin to notice the pull before we follow it. We begin to feel anger without becoming anger. To experience fear without allowing fear to make every decision. To feel grief without drowning in it. To experience desire without being consumed by it. To think without believing every thought. To speak without needing to release everything we feel. This is emotional intelligence to me |The cultivation of relationship with what moves us. To know the strings. To feel the forces. To listen to the elements. And, little by little, to learn how to move with them, rather than being moved by them.
