Preparing for the Solar Eclipse + Chyron Retrograde in Aries | The Journey into the West
As we prepare for the New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Leo, I find myself returning once again to The Odyssey. Because it is the story of every human being who longs to find the way back to themselves.
There is a moment that has stayed with me.
Following Circe's guidance, Odysseus sails westward, to the edge of the known world, where he descends into Hades seeking the counsel of Tiresias. He does not journey there to erase his past or to escape his suffering. He goes because there are truths that only reveal themselves when we are willing to meet what we have kept in the dark.
The souls of the dead gather around him. Not to comfort him. Not to condemn him. But to remind him that every journey leaves traces, every choice carries consequences, and every life asks to be witnessed with honesty.
Perhaps this is what the shadow has always been, a messenger asking us to look again.
The work is never to become beings of perfect light. The work is to become conscious enough that our shadows no longer govern us from beneath the surface. Only then can Tiresias, blind to the outer world yet awake to the inner one, offer his prophecy. He reveals that the way home is not found by conquering another battle, but by becoming a different man.
This is why I love the image of the nympth Calypso, asking Odysseus to release the shattered raft and trust the sea. Why Calypso reminds us that comfort can quietly become captivity. Why the Sirens teach that discipline is not the denial of desire, but the devotion to what we know is true. And why Athena never removes the trials, but illuminates them with wisdom.
As Chiron continues his journey through Aries, the wounded warrior is invited to become the conscious guardian. Courage is no longer measured by how fiercely we fight, but by our willingness to descend into ourselves without turning away.
Perhaps this is also the invitation of the coming Solar Eclipse in Leo. An eclipse does not extinguish the Sun. It simply reveals that even light has its moments of concealment. And in that brief darkness, we are given the rare opportunity to see what the brightness of everyday life often hides.
As you prepare for this lunation, ask yourself |
What shadow is not asking to be eliminated, but understood? What truth have I been avoiding because it asks me to become someone new?
Perhaps, like Odysseus, we discover that the journey home has never been about finding the light. It has always been about learning to carry it.
Forgive me if mythology keeps finding its way into these reflections... but whenever the heavens move, I cannot help but hear the ancient stories whispering beneath the stars. They continue to remind me that every myth is, in truth, a map of the soul.
A little personal note...
This was the second time I watched The Odyssey, this time with my son. When we arrived home, he looked at me and said, "Sometimes I'm so happy... and then I have this reality check that all of this is temporary. That one day you and papi won't be here."
His words stayed with me. Perhaps that is why Odysseus refused Calypso's offer of immortality. As if woven by the Fates themselves, I was holding a Blue Lotus that had arrived that very day, a gift from a Gemini friend whose Sun lives in the 12th house, the house of the mystic waters. Some correspondences feel less like coincidence and more like gentle reminders that mythology is still alive, quietly speaking through the ordinary moments of our lives.
To be human is not to escape death. It is to allow the certainty of our mortality to make us love more deeply, forgive more readily, and be more present with those who walk beside us.
As we spoke, I found myself thinking about the Sun. Every evening it disappears into the western horizon, only to rise again at dawn. It is not an ending, but the rhythm of life itself. Each setting Sun quietly reminds us that every generation is called to illuminate the world in its own way. This is also one of the hidden teachings of the coming Solar Eclipse. Even when the light appears to disappear, it is only making space for a new way of seeing.
I told my son that one day it will be his turn. His turn to question. His turn to innovate. His turn to discover his own way home. Not by repeating my path, but by walking his own with courage, integrity, and wonder.
Maybe that is the greatest gift we can leave those who come after us, not certainty, not immortality, but enough love, enough wisdom, and enough freedom for them to become fully themselves.
So tonight, hug someone a little longer. Say the words that matter. Be completely where your feet are. Because the journey home is not only about where we are going…It is also about how wholeheartedly we choose to live while we are here.
